Extramural Activities

Part of a well-rounded education includes non-academic opportunities for social and physical growth. All students at Summit Hill are encouraged to become involved in the co-curricular activities afforded to them in the areas of interscholastic athletics, instrumental/vocal music, student government, and the various subject centered clubs. To participate in an activity, one must be in attendance for a minimum of two-and-one-half hours on the day of the event or activity.

Action Lab Club

Sponsor: Mrs. Maria Hoots
Activity Fee: $20
Students will be engaged in STEM projects from Action Lab. Projects include coding, robotics, green energy, building, computer graphics, circuitry, and more. The club runs two days a week from September through November. 

Aikido Club

Sponsor: Dr. Daniel Pierson
Activity Fee: $20
Aikido is a “modern” martial art developed by Morehei Ueshiba (“O’Sensei”- Great Teacher). O’Sensei was a master of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and several other jujitsu, sword, and staff arts. O’Sensei changed the martial art from one that would destroy an opponent to one where a person could protect oneself without doing harm to an attacker.
Aikido is an art that uses opponents’ strength and energy against them. Proper technique is what’s needed to accomplish the goal of protecting yourself and those around you.  An athletic physical is required.  

Anime Manga Club

Sponsor: Ms. Rachel Mackey
Activity Fee: $20
Students will engage in watching anime that is reflective of pop culture, discuss various aspects of Japanese culture(and geography) alongside how they are represented in these animations, compare elements of the anime to the manga, and more. All students who are interested in joining this community are welcome; we will vote on which anime to watch after our first meeting. This club runs once a week from September to December. 

 
 

Art Club

Sponsor: Ms. Brittany Stewart
Activity Fee: $20
Art Club provides an opportunity to engage in activities that are not part of the regular art curriculum. Students create individual pieces and collaborate with one another to produce unique works of art. All ability levels are welcome to join. This activity begins in September.
 

Band

Sponsor: Kim Coughlin
Any student who has prior experience playing a band instrument may participate in our school bands. Ensembles offered are:
  • Concert Band - a large group that meets all year. Several concerts are held throughout the year.
  • Symphonic Band: - our top group which requires passing an audition. The band meets before school every morning and has several performances throughout the year.
  • Marching Band - ALL band members combine as the Marching Spartan Band for the Fall Parade and a Lincoln-Way North football game. There is also a 12 member Colorguard involved with the Marching Band.
  • Jazz Band – These groups meet once a week and play a wide range of music including Latin blues, swing, and rock. Traditional jazz ensemble instrumentation is utilized.
  • Percussion Ensemble – Percussion I is for “real” percussionists and the other groups are open to band members who want to expand their horizons in learning percussion. These groups meet once a week at various times.
  • Pep Band – This group cheers our Spartan teams on to victory while playing fight songs and various other songs to support our school. They also take part in school pep assemblies.
  • Musical Revue – Our music department students (band, choir, and strings) present a musical revue each spring. Included are opportunities to play in the musical pit band, sing and dance on stage, choreograph moves, or work on prop, light, stage, and sound crews.
 

Battle of the Books

Sponsor: Ms. Jennifer Sutsser
Activity Fee: $20
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program where students collaboratively read from a list of sixteen titles. In teams composed of four to six students, readers will test their knowledge of the books read in an epic trivia style competition. Competition against other Spartans will take place in the Spring. 
 

Book Club

The Summit Hill Junior High Book Club is a group of students who get together to read, discuss books, and express their opinions. Book Club will evolve to fit all students, from proficient readers to struggling readers. It will be a comfortable atmosphere that promotes reading, critical thinking, and expressing ideas as well as a social outlet for students. Book Club will give its members confidence in their own opinions, will broaden their knowledge base, and will provide the opportunity to reflect on serious and/or sensitive topics. 
 

Card Club

Come learn at least 8 new card games as we play during card club. Learn fun games to play for family night or when hanging out with friends. 
 

Chess Club

Sponsor: Mrs. Dina Blevins
Activity Fee: $20
This is a co-ed club. Students of all skill levels are invited. Students play and learn against each other. There will be a tournament to conclude the season. The IESA sponsors a state series in this activity.
 

Choir

Activity Fee: $20
Any student can audition to be a member of the Choir. The Choir performs at the fall, winter, and spring concerts. This is open enrollment and practices are held after school.
 

Spartan Dance Club

Sponsor: Ms. Michelle Williamsen
Activity Fee: $20
Spartan Dance Club is an opportunity for students who love to dance, perform, showcase school spirit, and improve. All styles of dance are welcomed (contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, etc.) and levels of experience. Students will learn and improve their dance technique and combinations to various music styles. An end of the club performance will be scheduled for students to showcase their dancing. 
 

Drama Club

Activity Fee: $20
Drama Club is a performing arts and theater activity dedicated to educating students on all aspects of the theater through the rehearsal and performance of a Musical! While preparing for our performances, students will learn theatrical skills from blocking and character work to set design and stage management. The Spring Musical will be announced in October with more information to come.
 

Fearless Fridays

Fearless Friday- Calling all Taylor Swift fans. Each Friday we will meet and make bracelets, listen to music, and make inspirational posters for the school. See Mrs. Ostrowski in room 178.
 
 

Film Club

Education does not only need to come from textbooks. Film has an abundance of educational value. Cultural, artistic, musical, and historical values can be found in film. Students will use their own background knowledge and beliefs to connect to the films we watch. We will break down the different historical values and events of the films and discuss our connections to the cultural, musical, and artistic aspects as well. Students will also be utilizing movie-maker technology to make their own creative short films on any topic they like! This will also be an excellent avenue for students to socialize with peers on educational topics after school. 
 

Fishing Club

We are very excited to announce that Spartan Fishing Club is an official club at Summit Hill Junior High. We are welcoming all students who have an interest in the sport of fishing to join us! All skill levels are welcome. We have an abundance of students that enjoy the sport of fishing and want to make a fun club available to them. We will be fishing at the pond at Woodlawn Park, which is only a few blocks away from Summit Hill Junior High. We will have our outings set for fall and spring dates. Listen for the daily announcements for schedule information.
 

Fitness Club

Activity Fee: $20
The Fitness Club requires a sports physical. All are welcome to attend. Students use the Fitness Center after school. Listen for announcements for details of when the club begins in January.
 

Game Club

Meets: After school from 2:30 to 4:00pm Dates are TBD
Activity Fee: $20
Open to all 7th and 8th grade students, Game Club meets during the Spring in the Cafetorium. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of games. All skill levels are encouraged to join. From beginners to competitive, there is something for everyone! 
 

Happy Feet Walking Club

Sponsor: Mrs. Dina Blevins, Ms. Jodi Canter
Activity Fee: $20
Happy Feet Walking Club is an outdoor walking club that is open to all students. The club meets in the spring, and the guided walks take place usually 2-3 times per week during the months of April and May. The Walking Club often visits local parks, as well as local businesses, such as 7-11 or fast food restaurants. Purchases at businesses are not included nor required.
 
 

Recreation & Game Club

Open to all seventh and eighth grade students, this club meets during the Spring in the Cafetorium.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in various games including table tennis.  There is something for everyone! 
 

Go Green - Spartan Science Club

Activity Fee: $20
The purpose of this club is to enhance students understanding of the diverse fields of science and how all disciplines work together to better understand and explain our world. This is a hands-on club. Science Club will have a CSI - Forensics topic of study this year! Meetings will be held on Mondays beginning in September.
 
 
 

Math Club

Meets: December to April
Activity Fee: $20
The math team is comprised of 7th and 8th grade students, both boys and girls, who are interested in competing in math competitions. This is open to all students to participate but it is usually comprised of students who have a strong background in Math. Practices are held from December to April. This is one main competition held in April through the Lincoln-Way High Schools. The students also compete in two other competitions and, the IML and ICTM middle school competitions. 
 

National Junior Honor Society

Sponsor: Mrs. Yorlyn O'Leary
A faculty council for membership in the National Junior Honor Society selects eligible students. Membership is based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service, and character. Membership is open to both seventh and eighth grade students who qualify. Students must join a minimum of two Summit Hill Junior High Activities through each year, have a clean discipline file, and maintain a 3.91 GPA. Students must participate in mandatory service projects. Students must attend all mandatory meetings. Refer to handouts for more information.

 

Student Newspaper

Meets: Begins in September
Activity Fee: $20
Open to all seventh and eighth grade students. Do you enjoy reporting the news? Do you have a talent for writing? Are you a little bit familiar with desktop publishing? Do you know how to take and download digital photos? Well if you have the slightest interest, the Spartan Source school newspaper needs a group of talented students to produce a quarterly newspaper for our awesome school. Our Spartan Source is looking for students to join Newspaper Club. Listen to the announcements for club meetings and cancellations. 
 

Scholastic Bowl

Activity Fee: $20
Scholastic Bowl is a competition very similar to a “Team Jeopardy.” Talented students participate in a quiz competition including questions of math, science, history, literature, sports, geography, economics, and current events. Students must not be afraid to be wrong!
 

Scrapbook Club

Sponsor: Mrs. Rebecca Smith
Activity Fee: $20
This club provides students with opportunities to create scrapbook pages, projects, cards, or remembrances to share with friends and families. The teacher shares techniques and materials, and the hour flies by as we "scrap" together. There will be several special scrapbooking projects that will focus on Halloween, Thanksgiving, December holidays, Valentine's Day, Mothers & Fathers Day. We ask you to bring your favorite photographs that you would like to look back on. We will include these in our scrapbook pages. 
 

Go Green – Spartan Science Club

Streaming Spartans

Activity Fee: $20
The Streaming Spartans is a year round club for 7th and 8th graders to deliver the weekly happenings to students via a Monday morning newscast. Students are given a script to practice ahead of time, and then they record the broadcast at school. Students also have opportunities to interview other students and teachers for different featured segments of the show. 
 

Strings

Sponsor: Mrs. Katie Goddard
Activity Fee: $20
The Strings Club has two groups – Beginning Strings and String Ensemble. Beginning students may learn to play violin, viola, cello, or string bass. String Ensemble is open to any students with at least one year of experience. Both orchestras perform seasonal concerts throughout the year. 
 

Student Council

Members are involved in many service activities throughout the school year. This is open to all students. The first meeting is the first full week of school. This club is a great way to plan school events. Come see what we are all about. 
 

Yearbook Club

Sponsor: Mrs. Yorlyn O'Leary

A yearbook is published every year at Summit Hill Junior High. A staff of students is selected at the beginning of each year to take pictures, design pages, and write text for the yearbook. The students learn to collaborate and focus on a long-term project of value to the school community.
 

Yoga Club

Activity Fee: $20
Yoga Club is for anyone who is new to or experienced in practicing yoga. Yoga is for every body; come as you are! Through practices of mind, body, and soul, yoga provides tools for social, emotional, and physical well-being to manage stress, connect with yourself, and have fun! Yoga is a great non-competitive activity that has many health benefits. Yoga will be held on certain Wednesdays throughout the school year. with Mrs. Szewczyk, a certified yoga teacher, in room 161 unless announced otherwise. An up-to-date physical will be required. Relax and try some yoga this year!
